For example, Derwall, Gunster, Bauer, and Koedjik, K. (2003) have incorporated the innovest eco-proficiency scores of US organizations, and have taken a gander at the natural factor. Subsequent to controlling the hazard and venture style, they presumed that the high-positioned portfolio outflanks the low-positioned portfolio. The outcomes become noteworthy when balanced for industry impacts. Becker and Huselid (1998) have focused on the connection between HR the executives and firm execution. An examination of more than 500 multi-industry US organizations present that a superior HRM framework has a financially and measurably constructive outcome on hierarchical execution. Gompers, Ishi, and Metrick, A. (2003) have underlined the corporate administration perspective. They have drafted an administration list utilizing 24 administration rules on 1,500 huge US firms. A speculation system that bought portions of all around represented firms and sold offers in seriously administered firms earned an irregular return during the 1990s. The exploration has applied style-alterations. Bauer, Gunster, and Otten (2003) have broke down the impact of corporate administration on stock returns and firm worth. They have used the Deminor Corporate Governance evaluations to fabricate an arrangement of associations with terrible corporate administration. They discover positive outcomes for style-balanced returns, with more vulnerable positive outcomes after alteration for nation contrasts. In rundown, dominant part of the investigations have introduced an out-execution for SRI portfolios contrasts and progressively customary venture draws near, regardless of whether such contrasts don't generally present as factually huge. At the point when specific elements of maintainability are explored, progressively noteworthy and positive outcomes are delivered, proposing that a few aspects of corporate social obligation may likewise contribute investor esteem. Speculation This exploration will investigate the effectiveness of the web, particularly the corporate sites in transmitting messages with respect to oneââ¬â¢s corporate social duty. Similarly, it would decide the job of corporate duty in expanding benefits and incomes of a specific association. It would take a gander at how US organizations join their corporate social duty into their sites and how they interface the most present and important issues into the general qualities of the organization (corporate profile) and of their items and administrations. In a similar way, this investigation intends to take a gander at how these issues have been introduced in their sites. Are they utilizing the spellbinding or instructive methodology and are they increasingly business in context as opposed to permitting a moral valuation or an evaluation of the companyââ¬â¢s bargains in its creation. This would likewise investigate the issue of corporate administration. This examination will be subjective in nature. As indicated by Fay (1996), subjective specialists endeavor to precisely depict, disentangle and decipher the exact implications of a specific marvel to an individual or gathering of individuals. The examination will likewise be founded on the interpretative worldview. As per Saunders et al. (2003) interpretive examination is a more extensive term than subjective exploration and it incorporates every single different methodologies dependent on member perception, for example, ethnographic, subjective, phenomenological, constructivist, and contextual investigations. Second, interpretive examination doesn't convey with it the bogus implication of barring the utilization of quantitative measures. The center lies at the various developments and implications individuals place upon their own encounters and the purposes behind those distinctions. The specialist will utilize three tests centered in one gathering. These will incorporate reviews, center gathering conversations and meetings that are fundamental in increasing essential information. The center gathering conversation of subjective investigation was used, offering the defender the chance to development and explain certain aspects of the examination to the analysts and to the friends of the exploration gathering. It additionally allowed the individuals from the center gathering to communicate his/her emotions, feelings and concerns. Following this, the center gathering conversations made were reported and specifically investigated. So as to viably assess the examination theory and meet the destinations of the investigation, this examination will utilize two subjective exploration strategies â⬠the center gathering conversation and meeting strategy for research. Subjective examination in itself makes for an inside and out assessment and investigation of human elements and the sort of reasons that inspire such conduct and the reasons that spin around such conduct to prod out in any case. When contrasted with quantitative examination, the subjective strategy for investigation depends on the key explanations for the responses of individuals when outer components are applied to a given circumstance. Basically, it examines the why and how of dynamic, comparative with what is being recognized by the quantitative technique for investigation â⬠what, where, and when (Denzin and Lincoln 2000). Hence, subjective examination just requires a moderately little gathering when contrasted with the generally huge yet the greater part of if not the entirety of the time are arbitrary examples. Subjective exploration additionally recognizes and sorts information into significant and accommodating examples as the establishment for association and the reason for announcing the sort of results for information. S. Flying during World War I American flying was in its earliest stages when the United States entered WWI in 1917. We will compose a custom article test on American Aviation During Wwi or on the other hand any comparable subject just for you Request Now Most U. S. pilots were undeveloped in air battle and utilizing airplane that were less advanced than their foes. At the point when the U. S. joined the partnered powers in April of 1917, it had 56 pilots and under 250 airplane, which were all old. In July of 1917, congress appropriated $640 million to shape 354 battle units. There were no ventures in the U. S. as of now producing airplane. With a couple of preliminary and mistakes upheld by the administration, the Bureau of Aircraft Production and a different Division of Military Aeronautics were built up. The new business created 11,754 airplane and the Army set up 27 essential flying schools in the United States. American pilots would not have the option to use these assets until the finish of the war. A considerable lot of the forays flown by U. S. pilots were in outside airplane. A portion of the airframes utilized were the Salmson perception planes, Spad XIII interests, Havilland DH-4ââ¬â¢s, Breguet 14ââ¬â¢s, and some French inflatables. Albeit a significant number of these airframes helped win unequivocal air fights, they were no correlation with the German Fokker. Fokker was a Dutch airplane producer that started delivering planes in Germany. The ââ¬Å"Fokker Scourgeâ⬠had progressive deadly implement and was the most dreaded airframe during WWI. An American pilot by the name of Eddie Rickenbacker reviews in his book ââ¬Å"Fighting The Flying Circusâ⬠a chance to exchange a German pilot his life for his Fokker airplane. Despite the fact that the United States flight units needed preparing and adequate airplane, they were as yet ready to have any kind of effect in WWI and proceed to have air predominance right around one hundred years after the fact. This could be licensed to winning definitive fights and the U. S. being a ââ¬Å"learning association. â⬠With the work of inflatables and fixed wing airplane for channel fighting {text:soft-page-break} observation, the U. S. had the option to spare a large number of troopers while conveying bombs and shots from the sky. American military administration saw the significance of this asset and has planned in surveillance airplane from that point forward. With channel fighting, an impasse would frequently create with the two sides having neither a bit of leeway nor a disservice. Having air surveillance would end up being important in gathering knowledge on adversary positions. These equivalent airplane would be fitted with bombs to clear advance foe channel lines and to wreck their back flexibly. Air recon planes were equipped with an onlooker who might delineate foe fortresses while archiving the size and weapons of the foe. Airborne surveillance later on becomes one the fundamental focal points of the U. S. military. Surveillance airplane during WWI were enormous, massive, and moderate. This made it simpler for adversary ground troops to kill and littler, quicker airplane to crush. The Allied and Axis powers both started to convey warrior airplane to ensure these recon planes and to devastate any foes they interacted with. This utilization of littler, quicker, very much equipped airplane helped introduce the period of supersonic contenders in current fighting. WWI showed the significance of warriors and the U. S. has contributed a ton of assets and investigation into their improvement. The United States was engaged with different measures of vital fights during the most recent two years of the war. A portion of these fights would check the start of Americaââ¬â¢s race for air predominance and the requirement for vigorously outfitted airplane. At the Battle of St. Mihiel, Billy Mitchell was given control of 1, 4821 airplane, just 40% being American. ââ¬Å"It was the biggest aviation based armed forces at any point gathered for a solitary activity, comprising of 366 perception planes, multi day aircraft, 91 night aircraft, and 701 interests. â⬠Pilots detailed the annihilation of streets and inflatables and {text:soft-page-break} airplane killed. The American Air Service being unpracticed in air fighting were attempted a yearning air battle that was incredible around then. In spite of the fact that St. Mihiel was not a total achievement, Col. Mitchell made an autonomous American Air Force that accepts that whatever the restriction is, no strategic ever be turned around. Billy Mitchell took escalated seminars on air transportation educated by united pilots. ââ¬Å"What they needed to state and significantly more, what they were doing, changed over him to a hypothesis of air power still neglected in the United States. Billy Mitchell comprehended the significance of air force and how indispensable it is win future wars. He accepted this such a great amount of that in 1925, he blamed Army and Navy pioneers for a practically ââ¬Å"treasonable demonstration of national securityâ⬠when he didn't get the assets requested. Mitchell was court-martialed and resigned in the blink of an eye a while later. He has been viewed as the d ad of the U. S. Aviation based armed forces and B-25 Mitchell was named in his respect. During WWI, Germany had built up air predominance with its flying order ââ¬Å"The Flying Circusâ⬠drove by the German Ace, Baron Manfred von Richtofen. The ââ¬Å"Red Baronâ⬠, hich he was ordinarily known, had eighty ethereal triumphs. The Baron and his armada of Fokkerââ¬â¢s would be Americaââ¬â¢s greatest test in getting the high ground in flying fighting. Skipper Edward Rickenbacker, of the American 94th Aero Pursuit Squadron, was only the man to take on such a ground-breaking adversary and have any kind of effect. ââ¬Å"Eddieâ⬠Rickenbacker was Americaââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Ace of Acesâ⬠who represented twenty-six airplane destroyed. Twenty-two of airframes were planes and four of them were inflatables. On September 25th, 1918, Rickenbacker brought down two planes on his solitary assault on seven German planes. Rickenbacker got the Congressional Medal of Honor for this in 1931. {text:soft-page-break} Captain Rickenbacker was a remarkable pilot, yet he comprehended the significance of having an incredible airframe in the U. S. Armyââ¬â¢s armory. Rickenbacker, and numerous other U. S. pilots, just approached unacceptable airplane and as a rule, needed to acquire from different nations. During an attack in September of 1918, Captain Rickenbacker and Lt. Coolidge (child of Calvin Coolidge) experienced a few German foes over Grand Pre. Lt. Coolidge, probably the best pilot in the 94th Aero Pursuit Squadron, was killed. Rickenbacker proceeded to kill a few German planes before making a beeline for Allied domain. Rickenbacker saw a German Fokker on his way back whoââ¬â¢s motor had evidently slowed down. Rickenbacker wound up in an inquisitive position and concluded that as opposed to destroying him, he would bring his ââ¬Å"prizeâ⬠back unblemished. As the German Fokker cruised down toward the path Rickenbacker had guided him, another airplane (Rickenbacker didn't know whether it was French or American) appeared suddenly and crushed the plane. ââ¬Å"So almost had I prevailing with regards to catching flawless a most important Fokker from Germanyââ¬â¢s most celebrated Squadron! Chief Rickenbacker and numerous other American pilots comprehended the significance of having the high ground in air fighting. They comprehended that wars can be won from the sky and extraordinary airplane were required for this to occur. More pilots lives were lost because of airplane glitch than to adversary moun ted guns. Life was short during World War I and American pilots lived it valiantly. This brought the requirement for more secure, solid airplane in the U. S. military. With the militaryââ¬â¢s acquisition of 11,754 airplane close to the finish of the war, the U. S. was en route to air predominance. A portion of these planes were cut from the spending plan after WWI, yet before long turned into a concentration during World War II. {text:soft-page-break} Aeronautical accomplishment before the finish of World War I, had won kindness by the American military, yet with the American open. Each man who goes up and demolishes either a plane or a Zeppelin noticeable all around should, I hold, have a knighthood in the event that he gets down alive. World War I fights including avionics helped sparkle Americaââ¬â¢s race for air predominance. Military authority perceived the job flying would play in future wars and securing our country. More assets and assets were produced to procure the best airplane and the best pilots. Without American association in such fights as the ââ¬Å"Battle of St. Mihielâ⬠, America may have joined the aviation race much later and met with rout. As the time passes by, the school board in Texas changes the requirements for passing to the next school grade level. ââ¬Å"Texas led the way in implementing standardized test in the early 1990sâ⬠(Klein). Before, grade level students used to take the TAKS (Texas Assessment Knowledge and Skills) and now students are taking STAAR (Student of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) test. With this choice, students are not learning other materials other than just testing, testing, and more testing material. I believe that students should be taught something different other than just focusing on tests for the whole school year. Texas has ââ¬Å"more than 776 school boards, covering 85 percent of the students in the state, have passes resolutions calling for a more nuanced, less punitive approach to student and school assessment in the last few months. And thatââ¬â¢s after the state began rolling out the new-and-improved testing system known as STAARâ⬠(Michels). I disagree with Michels because the STAAR test is more pressure for students, yes is a different standardize test, but is just a different way to evaluate children in their school learning. Many of the students are probably trying to memorize all this things they are taught for the STAAR test, but at the end they would not even remember a single thing they were taught for the test. The glass door in to the college life paints and paves in a way that life looks complete. Its like the hiker has reached to the peak. But its only time that teaches us the peak is the base camp for all the challenges in life. Its than we understand the difference between believing and experiencing because life is not fair where everything is not simple like math calculations, rather its more complex than the universe itself. The material world does not make us change or experience anything new in life. its the people around us who guide us and shapes our thought about the reality of life. When I entered college the excitement was thrilling meeting new people and making friends was the best part of life. I had in my mind that these friends were there to stay forever. The never ending conversations about everything and anything brought us closer. Made me a happier and happening person, the parties were on and I felt on top. The car race was thrilling and the whole world was spinning on our beat. But this dream life was not there to stay forever. The mistakes I made were growing everyday and I realize that the goodness in me was dieting in me with every breath. As two years went by things started shifting to the other side. The differences in us were the only thing left behind. It didnt happen over night. Saturday nights were a part of me as the racing cars were my passion but one Saturday my friend ha an a ccident while he was racing with me. The accident was serious in nature as he barely made out of the burning car. Going every day to the hospital and telling him everything will be fine was all I could do. I felt very guilty because if at the time of accident I would have shown some courage than my friend would not have been in so much pain. At the time of accident my car was very close to his car and I had the time to help him get out of the car, but I stopped because of the fear that if the car went on fire I will die in it too. This guilt and pain has taught me a lot in life. To fear from situation and not making the move on the right time will make you a loser in your eyes. Standing up and looking at the mirror becomes difficult. The selfishness in me was the only thing left in me, as I didnt have the honesty to admit of my fault in front of my friends. I just showed that I care with a fake smile. His wounds got better with time and I was fighting within my mind that how should I get rid of this feeling of being a coward. The best possible solution that I thought was to ignore my friend and this situation. My attitude made things difficult not only for me but for everyone around me . Things were changing within me and it was then I realize that I need to change things. I took the hard way and changed the college. This was also because of the college administration as my grades were becoming unacceptable for them. Changing the college was like giving re birth to me. A new pplace for a new me that is what I was thinking entering those glass doors. Buts things werent easy at that time trusting people while making friend was just not an option for me. My old friends they kept on mailing back asked me if I was doing well. I used take pride in my friendship it all ended up to be so meaningless. But as time moved on I made new friends nothing was like it was before but still life doesnt stop. Going to college is the most wonderful experience of life that is because we are all old enough to decide about what is good? And what is bad we learn to analyze things. In my college years I have learned the most important chapter of my life that is I have start understanding myself and the world better. I assumed myself to be the bravest person but my assumptions were merely just thought and unless and until we dont take some action, the thoughts are worth nothing. If I would have stood for my friend that day I would have been a different being but one wrong move has shape up my new personality in which I cannot forgive myself. I am scared of the word trust because I have ditched myself by ditching my friend. This is not I am an extremely selfish person that even whatever happened I didnt apologized to my friend rather left the college to overcome my guilt. If you take one wrong step, the next wrong step wont make things right. The hard way is to accept and admit your mistakes in f ront of people because everyone around us is probably more forgiving than we are to ourselves. The fight for and over arts education has been one that has effectively and efficiently led to a longstanding advocacy for its inclusion in the daily curriculum. Ultimately, the arts in the schools became something to fight for and over the next ten years, arts activists associated with New York City's vast array of cultural organizations and arts institutions emerged to do so. They began using artists to fill in the breach. They used the financial support of arts funders to develop existing arts outreach programs and to create new institutions whose mission was to educate public school children. Over time, more than one hundred of the city's arts organizations, from the major institutions down to the tiniest fragile dance ensembles, developed a roster of "teaching-artists" in a wide range of art forms ââ¬â collage, African drumming, Chinese calligraphy, modem dance, opera, flamenco, and puppetry, to name a few ââ¬â who would visit public school classrooms. In the early years, they would visit each classroom several times and present performances. As time went on, the teaching rather than the performance took precedence and teacher engagements got longer until they involved typically ten to sixteen visits (Horowitz & Ingram, 2005). Wars are harmful for everyone. It kills people, destroys the economy and results in a decline in civilizations. Muslims are not even allowed to kill the prisoners of war or ill treat them and they have to release them after taking a ransom amount from them. Once after a war Prophet (P.B.U.H) told the literate prisoners to teach ten Muslim children for a certain period of time in exchange of freedom. It is a play written in London in 1592 and published in 1623. The play is set during the Jacobean era (1420-1600). The purpose of the play is to entertain an audience. The secondary purpose may be to inform a modern audience about power and roles of men and women in the Jacobean era. During this period of time, a persons power was shown by the language they used, so the more quick-witted and articulate a person was in conversation the more social power they held. Shakespeare uses various linguistic features in conveying the power struggle between Katherine and Petruchio. Throughout the play Petruchio belittles Katherine and damages the face she presents of herself in an effort to tame the shrew. Kath. A joint-stool. Pet. Thou hast hit it. Come, sit on me. The face that Katherine presents is not that of a typical woman. She is very vituperative and unwilling to conform to societys expectations of marriage. And by using this sexual innuendo to counter her insult, Petruchio performs a face threatening act. He reminds her of his intent to marry her and the fact that to him, she is just another woman. The utterance Come, sit on me, is an imperative. By using this Petruchio is suggesting that he feels he has enough power over her to be able to order her around. This damages her positive face of self-image, but she counters this insult in an effort to preserve her face. Kath. No such jade as you, if me you mean. The noun jade refers to a worn out horse. This connotes he is infertile and thus insulting his manhood. This insult is also a face-threatening act as it damages Petruchios positive face. He thinks he is man enough to be the one to tame the shrew but by saying this Katherine is telling him he is not. Both characters use face threatening acts to attempt to gain power of the exchange. Petruchio also uses connotation to damage Katherines face. Pet. Alas, good Kate, I will not burden thee! For, knowing thee to be but young and light. The adjective light connotes sexual promiscuity again reminding her that he sees her as a woman he can easily woo contrasting with the strong women she sees herself as. The adjective young connotes that she is naà ¯Ã ¿Ã ½ve and therefore not able to match his wit, allowing Petruchio power over the exchange. Petruchio uses a pun to make fun of Katherine. Pet. For dainties are all Kates. The pun is on the word cates. These are a form of delicate food. This connotes the idea that Kate is delicate and lady-like. This riles Katherine as, as well as using the name that she does not like he is seeing her as the opposite she sees herself and by seeing through her faà ¯Ã ¿Ã ½ade he knows how to gain power over her. The repetition of her name also serves to make fun of her. Pet. You lie in faith, for you are calld plain Kate, And bonny Kate, and sometimes Kate the curst; By repeating her name in these noun phrases he is showing he doesnt care that she does not like the name, and shows that her sharp tongue has no affect on him, allowing him to maintain the power between them, and eventually to tame the shrew. The repetition of her name also gives the utterance a steady rhythm which serves to make Petruchio seem more intelligent as he seems to have control of his speech and words. Katherine uses metaphor to insult Petruchios intelligence. Kath. Asses are made to bear and so are you. The ass is typically seen as a stupid animal so this noun is suggesting that he is stupid. The verb phrase to bear which means to carry something, connotes the idea that Petruchio is little more than muscle. This gives Katherine the power of the exchange as it is in fact Petruchios intelligence that makes them equal and by insulting this she is suggesting that he is inferior. She also reminds him of the fact that she is equal to him in intelligence and power. Kath. Too light for such a swain as you to catch. Katherine turns the adjective light around to connote that she is more quick-witted than Petruchio, whereas he had used it to say she was sexually promiscuous. This shows that they are of equal power and are able to feed off of each other to maintain the power balance. In contrast Petruchio tries to use compliments to break Katherine down. Pet. Say that she frown, Ill say she looks as clear as morning roses newly washd with dew. Say she be mute and will not speak a word, then Ill commend her volubility. The lexical fields of nature give the play a lexical cohesion. The noun nightingale and the phrase roses newly washd with dew are things that are generally seen as beautiful and by comparing Katherine to them, Petruchio is suggesting that she is also beautiful. This makes it seem as though he sees in her, things that nobody else can see and as he can see through her he can stay on her conversational level and maintain the power balance. The use of the infinitive verb in these sentences is a form of ellipsis. Say she be mute. This is another form of covert prestige as Petruchio uses non-standard forms whereas Katherina is expected to use standard forms and correct tenses. This again shows, according to Jacobean society men were more dominant than women and suggests Petruchio is confident that he will have power in the exchange. These documents basically told the people of the civilizations what is expected of them and what will happen if they donââ¬â¢t follow them. The Laws of Manu were the laws made for the people of India while the Code of Hammurabi were the laws made for the people of Babylon. Both the Laws of Manu and the Code of Hammurabi concentrated a majority on the aspects of marriage, family, and laws of the land. In my opinion, The Code of Hammurabi was harsher than The Laws of Manu. The Code of Hammurabi was for all the people no matter what class they were classified in, even though slaves and women were mostly treated like property in all places at this time. The Code of Hammurabi was also made more as what is morally right and to help maintain order in the civilizations; while the Laws of Manu were made more on the religious side and to promise the people eternal life if they followed these laws. The Code of Hammurabi gave more of an ââ¬Å"if you donââ¬â¢t follow these rules you will just dieâ⬠tone to it. The Code of Hammurabi was also straight forward and to the point, while the Laws of Manu gave more detail. In the Laws of Manu they get in more depth of every aspect of peopleââ¬â¢s lives. In chapter two, number 57, it states, ââ¬Å"excessive eating is prejudicial to health, to fame, and to bliss in heaven; it prevents the acquisition of spiritual merit, and is odious among men; one ought, for the reasons, to avoid carefully. â⬠Thatââ¬â¢s telling people how much they should eat. The laws of Manu are basically telling people how to live their lives in every aspect and if you donââ¬â¢t you wonââ¬â¢t have eternal life. The laws also have different rules based on what caste the people are categorized into; the higher the caste, the more privileges. In Chapter five, number 32 it states, ââ¬Å"A Brahmana, having got rid of his body by one of those modes practiced the great sages is exalted in the world of Brahinan, free from sorrow and fear. â⬠The laws promises if you obey these laws you will never feel any pain and just happiness. It also put all Brahmanas on a high pedestal and a lot of the laws do not apply to them. In Chapter 10, number 103, ââ¬Å"By teaching, by sacrificing for, and by accepting gifts from despicable (men) Brahmanas (in distress) commit not sin, for they (are as pure) as fire and water. The Laws of Manu has more religious purpose behind it than, the Code of Hammurabi. The Code of Hammurabi was made more to put order in the Babylonian civilization and it also is more straight forward. Even though it has religious reasons and was made by a very religious man, it was still mostly made to keep order in the civilization. The Code of Hammurabi even addresses how much things can be bought and sold for. Number 239, ââ¬Å"If a man hire a salor, he shall pay him six gur of corn per yearâ⬠, another example is number 243, ââ¬Å"As rent of heard cattle he shall pay three gur of corn to the owner. The Code of Hammurabi also has more of a revenge seeking tone to it. Just in number one is the perfect example for people to get revenge. ââ¬Å"If any one enshare another, putting a ban upon him, but he cannot prove it, then he that ensured him shall be put to death. â⬠Another example of revenge is number 218, ââ¬Å"If an physician make a large incision with the operating knife, and cut out the eye, his hands shall be cut off. â⬠This document for the most part was mostly a way to punish people or bring justice to the people. It also talks about going to court and having cases to justify situations, for example number five, ââ¬Å"If a judge try a case, reach a decision, and present his judgment in writing; if later error shall appear in his decision, and it be through his own fault, then he shall pay twelve times the fine set by him in the case, and he shall be publicly removed from the judgeââ¬â¢s bench, and never again shall be publicly removed from the judgeââ¬â¢s bench, and never again shall he sit there to render judgment. â⬠This also goes to show that The Hammurabi Code punished anybody from doctors and lawyers, to women and slaves, your social class did not matter. Surprisingly to me, they both had women rights in there as well. The Laws of Manu gave more freedom to women but yet the Code of Hammurabi gave women more protection. In number 130, ââ¬Å"If a man violates the wife of another man, who has never known a man, and still lives in her fatherââ¬â¢s house, and sleeps with her and be surprised, this man shall be put to death, but his wife is blameless. In the Laws of Manu, chapter eight, number 364 it states ââ¬Å"He who violates an unwilling maiden shall instantly suffer corporal punishment; but a man who enjoys a willing maiden shall not suffer corporal punishment, if his caste be the same as hers. Not only does that show justice for women but gave women freedom to have casual sex and from the context clues of the Code of Hammurabi, it was frown upon and not classy. Women still didnââ¬â¢t live independent in both civilizations. Also, in both civilizations women were under control by a man from birth to death. Before marriage it is her father, during marriage it is her husband, and at old age it is her son(s). In the Laws of Manu, Chapter nine, number 14, ââ¬Å"Women do not care for beauty, nor is their attention fixed on age; (thinking), ââ¬Ë(It is enough that) he is a man,ââ¬â¢ they give themselves to the handsome and to the ugly. You can also tell that both societies take marriage and respect serious. Unlike in this day and time, the wife gets nothing if divorce is approved. In the Code of Hammurabi number 141, ââ¬Å"If a manââ¬â¢s wife, who lives in his house, wishes to leave it, plunges into debt, tries to ruin her house, neglects her husband, and is judicially convicted: if her husband offer her release, she may go on her way, and he gives her nothing as a gift of release. If her husband does not wish to release her, and if he takes another wife, she shall remain as a servant in her husbandââ¬â¢s house. In the Laws of Manu it shows that the Indian society did not have age limits on marriage. In chapter nine, number 94, ââ¬Å" A man, aged thirty years, shall marry a maiden of twelve who pleases him, or a man of twenty-four a girl eight years of age; if (the performance of) his duties would (otherwise) be impeded, (he must marry) sooner. â⬠Both documents were made to control people and both wer e harsh compared to what we know and live today. They both inform us of how life was back then and how time changes. Some things are still used in todayââ¬â¢s societies, like the how women should always remain classy. In the Laws of Manu it states in chapter nine, number 13, ââ¬Å"Drinking (spirituous liquor), associating with wicked people, separation from the husband, rambling abroad, sleeping (at unseasonable hours), and dwelling in other menââ¬â¢s houses, are the six causes of the ruin of women. Also in the Code of Hammurabi, number 110, ââ¬Å"If a sister of a god open a tavern, or enter a tavern to drink, then shall this woman be burned to death. â⬠Even though they are from different places they still have the same concept and purposes. It represents a serious socio-legal debate. People do not always die well. Some afflictions cause people to suffer extreme physical pain in their last days, and euthanasia may seem a compassionate way to end the pain. The case of Karen Ann Quinlan set a precedent for patientââ¬â¢s right to refuse unwanted medical treatment. However, the credit of bringing euthanasia to the public goes to Jack Kevorkian. It was practiced in Ancient Greece and Rome and was supported by the Socrates and Plato. Euthanasia was more acceptable under Protestantism and during the Age of Enlightenment. Among the Nazis it was based on the policy, ââ¬ËLife unworthy of lifeââ¬â¢ needs to be destroyed as their burdensome existence hampers the growth and development of national economy. H. Audenââ¬â¢s poem of despair, misery, and isolation, ââ¬Å"Refugee Bluesâ⬠, describes the hardships faced by two German Jewish refugees attempting to escape Hitlerââ¬â¢s Germany. Published in autumn, 1939, Auden is surrounded by the anti-Sematic hatred that is growing in Germany six months prior to the outbreak of World War II. Auden utilizes this environment and the experiences of German Jews to express the abuse of human rights and the sentiments of refugees. For the near two thousand years that the Jewish people have lived in Europe, they have constantly battled anti-Semitism, having to defend themselves, physically and emotionally, time and time again. His command for all Jews to be killed is personified as the rumbling of thunder that can be heard just before light ning strikes, and the world descends into the chaos of a political storm. The last stanza of the poem describes Jewish people being hunted, either by death squads or by soldiers looking to put them into labor camps. Throughout the poem, Auden uses contrast to demonstrate the struggle of the inequality of Jewish people. He juxtaposes Jewish people with animals, displaying the disdainful perception of German Jewish refugees through the lines, ââ¬Å"Saw a poodle in a jacket fastened with a pin. Saw a door opened and a cat let in, but they werenââ¬â¢t German Jews my dearâ⬠(22-23). The speaker reflects that cats were welcomed into open doors, yet they were not. Additionally, the refugee speaks of how he, ââ¬Å"Saw the fish swimming as if they were freeâ⬠(26), and how the fish in the quay are free, yet they were not. Auden shows that animals were treated with more compassion than Jewish refugees. Although, looking at it from our Judaeo-Christian point of view we may be appalled by some of their practices. We also have to realize that they have strengths. Things Fall apart is the idea of balance and interdependence, earth and sky, individual and community, man and woman or different perspectives on the same situation. The central image of this balance is contained in the Ibo concept of chi, which occurs throughout the novel. A persons chi is their destiny, his inner self, you wouldn't challenge your chi to a wrestling match, as did Okonkwo when he assisted in the killing of Ikemefuna, whom he loved and who called him father. Okonkwo sins not only against the earth goddess, protector of family relations, but also against his inner most feelings or his chi. Any bad luck that occurs, people of this c ulture would say that you have a bad chi. Okonkwo's destiny is marked by bad luck, one reason may be that he is so driven by the fear of resembling his father that he struggles to express part of his personality with predictably afflicted results. This was a society where a man was judged by his own achievement and not that of his fathers. Yams were the primary crop of Umuofia. A sign of manliness was if you could farm yams to feed your family. Okonkwo is respected because of his hard work. The complex patterns of Umuofia's economic and social customs materialize throughout this novel as we see Okonkwo compelled to rid himself of any similarities that his father had. Unoka had no titles, was lazy and when he died was greatly in debt. Some may wonder how a society like the Ibo's functioned, how they enforce its laws with no kings, no organized police force, and no standing army. Indeed this is something our modern culture could study. These things were accomplished through the functions of the masked spirits. The Egwugwu, represents the village's highest spiritual and judicial authority. The masked spirits are believed to represent their ancestors. This supports the myth The land of the living was not far removed from the domain of the ancestors. There was a coming and going between them, especially at festivals and also when an old man died because an old man was very close to the ancestors, as we saw when Ezeudu died. A man's life from birth to death was a series of transitional rites which brought him nearer and nearer to his ancestors. The Egwugwu is made up of the titled men of the village, they have legal, moral and religious authority. They have a working system of peace and order. this is demonstrated by t he trial of Uzowulu for beating his wife. They had a sense of community, the week of peace came at the end of the carefree season and before the harvest and planting season. During the week of peace Okonkwo broke the peace and was punished, as was the custom, by Ezeani, the priest of the earth goddess. He told Okonkwo, even though his wife was at may have been at fault, he committed a great evil. During the Week of Peace you are to live in complete peace no matter what the circumstances, the evil he did could ruin the whole clan. The feast of the New Yam is similar to our Thanksgiving, it was held every year before the harvest began, to honor the earth goddess and the ancestral spirits of the clan. The second day of the new year was the day of the great wrestling match between Okonkwo's village and their neighbors. Okonkwo's second wife Ekwefi, loved this festival. Many years ago when she was the village beauty, Okonkwo had won her heart by throwing the Cat in the greatest contest. She did not marry him then because he could not afford he bride price. In this culture they bargained over a bride price in Ekwefi's case it had been a cow, being a symbol of wealth Carlohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04461225849862307618noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4098911312523796065.post-86173363476557503522019-11-27T21:38:00.001-08:002019-11-27T21:38:04.805-08:00Prozac Essays (2250 words) - Depression, Eli Lilly And Company Prozac Abstract At first it was the cure all people were looking for. Then it became the drug they were afraid to take. Somewhere between these two extremes lies the truth about the drug Flouxetine, better known as Prozac, the most widely prescribed drug on the globe. It is mainly prescribed to patients suffering from clinical depression. It was first brought to the market in 1988 by the pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly co. Even though it was originally prescribed for depression, it has been prescribed for everything from eating disorders to insomnia. It was first considered the wonder drug of the new decade because of the way it helped depression patients when no other anti-depressant could and then also found to help many other personality disorders as well. But now it is frowned upon by many. Some of the side effects contributed to the growing opposition of Prozac include nausea, constipation, memory impairment, and excess sweating, just to name a few. What is depression? Depression can result from a physical disease, a mental illness, or it can be a recurring reaction of the body. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, major depressive illnesses are often the result of imbalances in neurotransmitters in the brain. It is these critical chemicals that send messages between nerve fibers and control mood (Creamer, 3). Older anti-depressants worked on three different neurotransmitters, serotonin, norepinepherine, and dopamine. However, it has been found that serotonin is the specific chemical in the brain that controls moods. It's job is to carry an impulse from one nerve fiber to the next. Serotonin is released by the nerve into the space between nerve fibers, carries the impulse to the next one, and is then reabsorbed by the first. when it is reabsorbed to quickly, a person feels depressed (6). ?Clinical depression? includes at least five of the following nine symptoms: 1. Feelings of sadness or irritability. 2. Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed. 3. Changes in weight or appetite. 4. Changes in sleeping pattern. 5. Feeling Guilty, hopeless or worthless. 6. Inability to concentrate, remember things, or makes decisions. 7. Fatigue or loss of energy. 8. Restlessness or decreased activity noticed by others. 9. Thoughts of suicide or death. Dr. Brian K. Martin, President of the Mental Health Association of Hawaii, recommends that anyone who has suffered five or more of these symptoms for two weeks or longer see a doctor (7). Nationally, the Mental Health Association estimates that only one-third of those suffering from depression actually seek help. Most are restrained, according to the association, ?by fear, lack of knowledge, misinformation, and stigma.? Depression is also the leading cause of suicide. It is estimated that 15 percent of seriously depressed people take their own lives (7). The cons of Prozac Historically, the use of drugs as fixers of the world's private ills has run into serious, if unanticipated, snags. At the turn of the century, the medical community thought that Cocaine was a completely appropriate, nonaddictive drug, and widely prescribed it. In the 1950s and ?60s, first barbiturates and then amphetimines were recommended for various psychological ailments. we now know that each of these drugs came with significant risks. So what yet-to-be-imparted knowledge may cause science, once again, to admit sheepishly that the exuberance over Prozac was somewhat premature, if not wholly overblown? Possibly, the biggest argument against this drug is merely the fact that it is prescribed for just about anything. It is estimated that it brought in over 1 billion dollars last year to Eli Lilly, the pharmaceutical company that brought us this wonder drug about ten years ago. It is prescribed for everything from eating disorders to panic to helping with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). David Dolan, Clinical director of one of the psychiatric programs at Jefferson Hospital in Jeffersonville Ky., agrees with many that Prozac is way oversold as a cure-all when it first hit the market. ?All of a sudden, Prozac was the medication for everything, then all of a sudden it was anything but. Almost overnight, a new phenomenon hit Louisville: Prozac panic. Instead of asking for, people were afraid to take it? (Aprile, 2). The change occurred in the weeks following Joseph Wesbecker's rampage, where he fatally shot eight people and injured 12, only to finally kill himself. After the shooting, lab tests revealed therapeutic levels of Prozac in his blood. Three other antidepressants and two other prescription drugs were also found in his blood in tiny amounts. Wesbecker's medical charts indicated that his psychiatrist thought Prozac may have Carlohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04461225849862307618noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4098911312523796065.post-58902736414111035472019-11-24T05:13:00.001-08:002019-11-24T05:13:04.930-08:00Drowned Rose EssaysDrowned Rose Essays Drowned Rose Essay Drowned Rose Essay Essay Topic: Drown The Drowned Rose Show how different points of view in the family community are developed in the story and how it affects the reader response. The Drowned Rose by George McKay Brown Is a ghost story about a doomed love affair which takes place In a close knit community and Is pieced together through various pollens by locals. In this essay I will show how different points of view can influence reader response through characterization, theme, symbolism and structure. The story tells us about a young school teacher called Sandra Macmillan, who was avian an affair with a married man named John Germinations. On the isolated island which they live on the close knit community have different opinions about the young couples affair. One night Sandra approaches William Reynolds the new school master at the local school as she mistakes him for John. William Reynolds immediately attracted to Sandra and Is desperate to find out more about her. Later on In the story when Mr. Reynolds Is playing a game of chess with the local molester Reynolds had seen her ghost. One of the main characters who influence the reader throughout the story is William Reynolds. He is immediately attracted to Sandra Macmillan and is fascinated by her and introduces the reader to them main theme in the story which is love. Throughout the story he doesnt have anything negative to say about her. She was certainly a very beautiful girl, with her abundant black hair and hazel eyes and small sweet sensuous mouth. This quote draws the reader in straight away and makes the reader become interested and eager to find out ore about her. Also the use of alliteration Small sweet sensuous helps the reader create a powerful Image of Sanders beauty. Another character who influences the reader throughout the story is Mr. Hendrickson. He is Mr. Reynolds next door neighbor and is very noses. He did not approve of Sandra and Johns affair and has nothing good to say ab out either of them. Mr. Hendrickson was a stereotype islander, very gossipy, bitter and narrow minded. Mr. Reynolds, I consider it my duty to watch, yes, and to report to proper quarters if necessary. This shows that Mr. Hendrickson watched Sandra and John throughout their affair and felt that he had to, when really he Just wanted to know everything that was going on between the young couple. This antipathies how noses and gossipy Hendrickson Is. Also George McKay Brow uses symbolism to empathic Hendrickson character because Henderson only gossips over his garden wall to Reynolds and the walls surrounding him symbolism his narrow mindedness. Due to his disapproval and deedless for the young couple the reader becomes aware that one of the mall themes in this story is persecution as Hendrickson was strongly against the couples Sandra was the school mistress at the local primary school before she died and the children at the school add to the readers response. The children really warmed awards Sandra and enjoyed having her as a teacher. She would take them on nature walks to let them see the wild flowers and would take them to the beach to collect shells. She made all the children feel special and they became almost obsessed with her. Miss Macmillan Miss Macmillan Miss Macmillan The name scattered though the school as if a rose had shed its petals. This quote shows the childrens obsession with their old teacher by using the repetition of her name. The way in which the children look up to their teacher and how they admire her encourages the reader to eel sympathy towards Sandra because she was Judged and seen as a bad perso n. Also Brown uses symbolism to show Sanders character and symbolisms her as a rose. A rose is the symbolism of love and the color red can suggest danger. This shows she is in love with John and is also dangerous toward Reynolds as he could end up very hurt and broken hearted. This also shows effectively the theme of love. George McKay Brown uses symbolism again when talking about the children. The class- room had been murderous as a beehive. This simile shows that the bees are symbolizing the children in the classroom. This s very effective because bees are attracted to flowers such as a rose therefore this antipathies the childrens feelings towards their old teacher. The local minister Donald Barr is also another important character in the story. He is the complete opposite of Mr. Hendrickson, he keeps himself to himself and doesnt like to talk badly about anyone especially Sandra Macmillan. Donald Barr is the person who reveals to Mr. Reynolds that Miss Macmillan is actually dead and is not keen at all to talk about her and how she died. This is because he will not talk wrong about the dead. Never ask me for a partial account. It seems to me they were happy. I refuse to wrong the dead. This shows the ministers loyalty towards the people in his community as he refuses to Judge the lovers for what they did and will not talk badly about it. This makes the reader think the same, what they did might not have been the right thing to do but they should not have been treated differently because of it. As well as characterization, theme, alliteration and symbolism I also found the structure of the story particularly effective. George McKay Brown wrote th e story in flashbacks. By using this structure it allowed the reader to form their own opinion of Sandra Macmillan as it takes you back to when she was a school teacher and lets the reader see what she was like with the children she taught. It also lets the reader see how the events in the past have effected the present day. In conclusion to this The Drowned Rose by George McKay Brown was a very interesting story to read and had a few twists which added to the enjoyment of reading it. After studying the story I grew to like Sandra Macmillan although Mr. Hendrickson was so critical towards her and because he was very much against her made me sympathies for her as he is a nasty individual. Crowne Plaza, for example, is a luxury hotel strategically located in the airport; the hotel poses a significant threat to Rodeway Inn SF Civic since it offers immense convenience to visitors. Additionally, Rodeway Inn SF Civic does not have conference facilities. The industry has shifted with most modern day hotels striving to attract visitors who come to the city for seminars and conferences. Media greatly persuades the minds of children and therefore such means are turning out to be the shapers and culture value transformers. It could be believed that media do fling socialization, although incomplete but it does inculcate the feelings and there could be an obvious alterations in the attitude of the child, modifications in habits and beliefs. This could further be strengthened if co-viewing is done with the adult. Although there are certain repercussions to this also as it takes away the time of the child, social interaction is reduced, there could be more beliefs on fictitious dispositions which generates confusion, it affects the psychology as there are certain values which need to be curtailed otherwise viz. violence, advertising, sexuality etc. Watching more of computer and TV affects the communication and interactive skills a nd also the academics. Parents and associated members of family or society plays vital role in developing the psychology of the child. There are various methods which aid in the development of positive predisposition. The companies become the top selling import in the market of US. Even though the sporty datsun gained popularity due to its reputation as the ultimate thrill machine, there were a number of management missteps that led to long-lasting decline of the company from 1980. First there was the change of brand name from Nissan to Datsun which was not popular. Secondly, there was little infusion of innovative in their popular car Z. This led to its decline in popularity hence few people went for it. In addition to its already faced problems, there was even more trouble as Nissan was unable to establish flexible relationships with its suppliers. It was also recorded that, their parts were extremely expensive as ranged from 15 to 20% above domestic competitors. This was obviously the decision of management to set prices high but as it was found out it was a wrong strategy as it led to a decline in sales (Covey 28). Nissan also faced competition that was unfavorable from Honda that led to Nissan having an expense of 1000$. This was a discount offered to consumers who purchased their vehicles. All these challenges forced Nissan to restructure their plans but were not successful since they faced powerful trade unions which were against the layoff of workers. Renault was another company which was facing problems for example in the year 1984; it experienced a loss of $2.4 billion. Among the reasons was how managers or heads of departments turned the separated silos into baronies that made it hard for cross functionality to take place in the company. The company also had embraced a narrow minded culture whose basis of thinking was one that was at the expense of a view that was larger. Renault was also experiencing a problem of additional unnecessary expenses through the operation of some of its plants. Introduction Indian Cement Industry An Overview Indian cement industry dates back to 1914 first unit was set-up at Porbandar, with a capacity of 1000 tones. [2] India manufactures 251.2 Million Tones of cement per year. Indias per capita cement consumption is only 156 kilograms against Chinas 600 kilograms. [4] Cement sales primarily through a distribution channel. Ready mix concrete a relatively nascent market in India. Installed Capacity Indian Cement industry is comprised of 148 large cement plants with around 46 member companies. The installed capacity of these large cement plants is estimated to be 219.17 million tones during 2009-10 (as on March 2009).There are 95 large cement plants with capacity of million tones and above and around 1, 40,000 manpower is employed under these plants (one MnT cement generates downstream employment to 50,000 persons). Also, there are 365 mini and white cement plants with an installed capacity of 11.10 million tones (P). [3] Statistics Cement Production Despatches (P) Source: Cement Manufacturers Association Cement production during April to January 2010-11 was 136.51 million tones as compared to 130.85 million tones during the same period for the year 2009-10. Despatches were estimated at 135.56 million tones during April to January 2010-11 whereas during the same period for the year 2009-10, it stood at 130.09 million tones. [3] Cement sector is characterized by the following Units concentrated near raw material sources or markets Power intensive High freight costs Small value chain Regional variation and volatility in prices and margins High debt levels Regional distribution of demand Seasonality of demand and cyclicality of the industry High entry barriers Consumer Demographics Buying Patterns of Indian Consumers The per capita consumption of cement in India is very low, as compared with the developed economies and the overall world average per capita cement consumption. The per capita consumption of cement in India is even less than that in Africa, a relatively underdeveloped continent. Over the past decade, the per capita cement consumption of cement has increased in most states, except Chandigarh, where it has declined by 7 %. Mechanics of Distribution Channels of Sector Companies invariably hire carrying forwarding agents or transport cements to own or government warehouses either via roadway or railways. Incase of exports, cement reaches the nearest port via roadways or railways and is then transferred to the importing country. Domestically, from warehouses the cement is transported to the dealers/distributors and in turn to sub dealers who finally sell it to the end users. There may or may not be physical ownership of goods. In the second case, dealers and sub dealers take order from buyers and place it to the companies, co ordinate and monitor the timely dispatch of said orders, transportation of goods and final delivery. Distributor network in cement industry is highly dominating and companies are compelled to hire as they do not really have that rapport and touch with the end consumer of their product. Apart, from this, the distributors have storage facilities as well which help control well in the entire supply chain as they are the ones who bring orders and therefore are directly responsible for the business that a manufacturer would do. Demand drivers Infrastructure construction sector the major demand drivers. Some demand determinants Economic growth Industrial activity Real estate business Construction activity Investments in the core sector Factors and causes behind the successful flourishing of the cement industries in India Technological change: The government and the industries are upgrading the quality and the technology that are used in the process of production. New investment are in process that are sure to make a change in whole processing and the output of cement There are host of companies are merging together to make their capacity and the produce big and this would lead to a greater development in the cement production. The real estate market is much optimistic and hence this helps in the growth and the enhancement in the field of cement production and investments. Companies and the investors are spending more on the infrastructure of this sector. Various national programs are taken in like National Rural Employment Guarantee, Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and Indira Aawas Yojana. Different Types of Cement There are different varieties of cement based on different compositions according to specific end uses, namely Ordinary Portland Cement, Portland Pozolona Cement, Portland Blast Furnace Slag Cement, White Cement and Specialized Cement. The basic difference lies in the percentage of clinker used. [5] 1. Ordinary Portland cement (OPC): OPC, popularly known as grey cement Clinker 95% Gypsum 5% Other materials White cement is a variation of OPC and is used for decorative purposes like rendering of walls, flooring etc. It contains a very low proportion of iron oxide. The applications are cover dry-lean mixes, general-purpose ready-mixes, and even high strength pre-cast and pre-stressed concrete. 2. Portland Pozolona Cement (PPC): Portland pozzolana cement is Ordinary Portland Cement blended with pozzolanic materials (power-station fly ash, burnt clays, ash from burnt plant material or Siliceous earths), either together or separately. Portland clinker is ground with Gypsum and Pozzolanic materials which, though they do not have cementing properties in themselves, combine chemically with Portland cement in the presence of water to form extra strong cementing material which resists wet cracking, thermal cracking and has a high degree of cohesion and workability in concrete. Clinker 80% Pozzolana 15% Gypsum 5% It is cheaply manufactured because it uses fly ash/burnt clay/coal waste as the main ingredient. It has a lower heat of hydration, which helps in preventing cracks. 3. Portland Blast Furnace Slag Cement (PBFSC): Portland blast-furnace slag cement contains up to 70 per cent of finely ground, granulated blast-furnace slag, a nonmetallic product consisting essentially of Silicates and Aluminum-silicates of Calcium. Slag brings with it the advantage of the energy invested in the slag making. Grinding slag for cement replacement takes only 25 per cent of the energy needed to manufacture Portland cement. Using slag cement to replace a portion of Portland cement in a concrete mixture is a useful method to make concrete better and more consistent. Portland blast-furnace slag cement has a lighter color, better concrete workability, easier finish ability, higher compressive and flexural strength, lower permeability, improved resistance to aggressive chemicals and more consistent plastic and hardened consistency. It has a heat of hydration even lower than PPC and is generally used in construction of dams and similar massive constructions. Clinker 45% Blast furnace slag 50% Gypsum 5% 4. White Cement: White Portland cement has essentially the same properties as gray cement, except for color, which is a very important quality control issue in the industry. It is manufactured using fuel oil (instead of coal) and with iron oxide content below 0.4% to ensure whiteness. Special cooling technique is used. It is used to enhance aesthetic value, in tiles and for flooring. White cement is much more expensive than grey cement. 5. Specialized Cement: Oil Well Cement: is made from clinker with special additives to prevent any porosity. Rapid Hardening Portland cement: It is similar to OPC, except that it is ground much finer, so that on casting, the compressible strength increases rapidly. 5 Source. www.acclimited.com Major players in cement industry 1) Associated Cement Companies Ltd (ACC) ACC Limited is Indias foremost cement manufacturer with a countrywide network of factories and marketing offices.
